We are most grateful to the Daiwa Anglo Japanese Foundation, London, for hosting a most successful launch of Georges Bigot and Japan: Satirist, Illustrator and Artist Extraordinaire on 12 April 2018 [see New Titles]. The main speaker was author Christian Polak who had travelled from Tokyo (via Paris) for the event – his round-trip journey completed successfully despite SNCF strikes. Christian, who has been researching Bigot and his work since the 1980s, was introduced by collaborator Sir Hugh Cortazzi whose ‘discovery’ of Bigot at a London antiquarian book auction some years ago had prompted his search for an opportunity to bring to the attention of the wider public Bigot’s outstanding talent as an artist and satirist, recording the changing face of Japan in last two decades of the nineteenth century.
